Dead or alive [a ] is a 1996 fighting game by tecmo and the first game in the longstanding team ninja dead or alive starburst game series. It was first released for arcades, then home ports were released for the sega saturn in the land of the rising sun, and then for the playstation anywhere.

Building on the success of the sega virtua fighter fighting game series on time, dead or alive takes inspiration from virtua fighter, adding its own specific gameplay elements. The game was praised for its combat strategy and advanced graphics. The game also attracted attention for its presentation, being more provocative than other popular 3d fighting games of the day.

Dead or alive was a commercial success, helping tecmo overcome its money problems. The success of the game helped turn the series into a franchise, including several sequels and numerous spin-offs. Playing followed dead or alive 2 in 1999.

The gameplay of dead or alive is borrowed from virtua fighter, however with certain key changes that change the way the play station is dead or alive when compared to virtua fighter .

Unlike the alternative fighting games of the time, dead or alive uses a hold button instead of the guard button, which causes the fighter to grab the limbs of the opponent they are on at the time.[ 3] this specificity of countering was central to the style of fighting games, where different commands were used corresponding to each type of attack. A huge corporation known as doatec (dead or alive tournament executive committee) is hosting a fighting competition called dead or alive world combat championship, where fighters from all over the world can compete for the title of world champion and a substantial amount of funds. The escaped kunoichi, who became known as kasumi, enters the dead or alive tournament to take revenge on her uncle raido, who was responsible for maiming her brother hayate.

Kasumi's brother, hayate, was next in front sleep to succeed his own dad, shiden, as the 18th leader of the mugen tenshin ninja clan. After raido crippled hayate, shiden was left bitter about what raido had done to his son, and shiden refused to discuss the details of the attack. Shiden ordered his daughter kasumi to take her brother's place as their clan's next leader. However, kasumi left the village. After figuring out that her evil uncle attacked her brother, kasumi tracks him down to a dead or alive tournament where she enters to defeat him.

Kasumi eventually wins by killing raido, but her decision to leave her village without permission violates the strict laws of ninja society and is punishable by death. She ends up becoming a hunted fugitive.

Development and production[edit]

In the mid-1990s, the japanese game company tecmo was having money problems. Seeing how popular the sega virtua fighter series was in the land of the rising sun in a bygone era, management asked tomonobu itagaki to create a game similar to virtua fighter. Itagaki was a fan of virtua fighter, but he wanted dead or alive to stand out from the competition. This included a stronger emphasis on provocation, as itagaki believed that entertainment had to be both sexuality and violence to truly be entertainment. All animations in the game were created using motion capture.[6]

The saturn transformation uses bitmaps and parallax scrolling just as much and virtua fighter 2 version for saturn. It also includes a new rendered intro, as well as tournament and practice modes. Tecmo released dead or alive for playstation in all localities. It was the first game made for sega arcade hardware and ported to the playstation. This version was based on the playstation variant with a slightly updated game flow that was later expanded for the sequel to dead or alive 2.

Remake[edit]
In 2004, tecmo released dead or alive ultimate, a pack that included remastered versions of the first two xbox doa games.
