The anno dracula series contains a virtual cornucopia of spinbetter characters that are related to wald newton. There are 3 novels and six short stories (at the moment) by kim newman, the effectiveness of which is going on in some world where dracula married a queen and wielded great power in victorian england. These are three books: anno dracula, the bloody red baron and judgment of tears: anno dracula 1959 (aka dracula cha cha cha).

The following is a list of heroes that appear in such an alternate universe. (I think i'll skip some links, so please feel free to contact me if you find any).

1888 anno dracula

Dracula, and others. From stoker's draculajack the rippersherlock holmes (mycroft holmes, inspector lestrade, diogenes club (secret service cover, as in wnu), professor moriarty, colonel moran) admiral sir mandeville messervy (obvious ancestor of admiral sir miles messervy, "m", from the james bond novels) waverley ("a benevolent figure", apparently an ancestor of alexander waverley, who headed uncle's headquarters in new york). )Doctor. Fu manchu and concrete criminal organization xi-fandr. Henry jekyll / mr. Hyde (from stevenson's dr. Jekyll and mr. Hyde)a. J. Raffles ("amateur burglar")griffin (from hg wells' the invisible man)doctor. Nicola (villain in guy boothby's novels). Moreau (from the island of dr. Moreau by h.G. Wells) clayton, taxi driver (see p. J. Farmer's book "the living tarzan", appendix 1, where professor h. W. Starr in his own article "a case of identification, or the adventure of the seven claytons, concludes that john clayton, taxi driver from watson/doyle's the hound of the baskervilles, and by the way is the 5th duke of greystoke and the grandfather of the 8th duke of greystoke, tarzan)rupert henzau (from the novel of the same name by anthony hope , and the continuation of hope's prisoner of zenda)allan quatermain (adventurer and explorer of h. Again, i think i missed at least half of the borrowed characters, especially the italian references.I omit references to living teachers and stick to fictitious borrowings of those people who either appear or are mentioned in tearful court. Thanks to mark brown, loki carbis, chris davis, greg geek and lou mougin. Reviews, and distributions are welcome.

Andrew mclean also helped me with a few suggestions:
Tom, the lost american (ripley from the novels of patricia highsmith, the oldest of which is recognized as "the talented mr. Ripley", 1957)lemmy caution is referred to as american detective - he is also from jean-luc godard's movie alphaville (1965). )The most serious of any is the mother of tears (this creation is brought from the trilogy "three mothers" proposed by dario argento, through which there were sometime two shares. The first, suspiria (1976), featured the mother of sighs, the other, inferno (1980), featured the mother of darkness. The third of the 3 mothers was not filmed at all, congratulations, to the delight, kim newman remembered.)

Vincent fish sent me a few:

Father merrin is an exorcist in the exorcist by william blattycabiria, probably from fellini's nights of cabiria »

Tristan sargent adds that,

The items tom intends to steal include an ugly but valuable figurine of a bird of prey and an egyptian scarab with a set of pinpoint flaws like big bear. It's more like hammett's the maltese falcon and stoker's pearl of the seven stars +> the newest and most likely the most durable of them is one among the models of the solid gold eiffel tower from the ealing comedy "the crowd on lavender hill"

Matthew davies also sends additional references: Jeremy prokosh from the movie mepri mepri also has fritz lang making a film about ulyssespalazzo otranto from horace walpole's the castle of otrantoprofessor adelsberg from the film der fluch der grünen augen (zombie cave)claire quilty and vivian darkbloom from vladimir nabokov's "lolita"i think "the english subalterns he was flogged during his student days" is a reference to simon raven, notorious for his children's novels newman mentions raven in the credits, but i've never read concretehamer radshaw from howard spring's "fame is a spur", a french reporter with nothing-button, whose forelock stood up" - tin-tin from numerous animated series ergeflat top - frankenstein's monster (boris karloff's version)clay monster - golem from jewish folklore, only specifically, this description is from golem movie 1920the robot doll is olympia from sandman by e. T.A. Hoffmanbasil hallward from "the picture of dorian gray" by oscar wildethe cool tones - from the rock and roll "flying saucer" by howard waldroproger penderel from "the old dark house"irena dubrovna from val lewton's cat peopleanthony aloysius st. Paul chamberlain adds:

Max brock is the (painfully bad) beatnik from roger corman's bucket of bloodflattop/frankenstein attacking bond also seems to be an amalgamation of oddjob from goldfinger and jaws from " the spy who loved me” (steel teeth)

Paul andinak adds:

Don simon isidro is a character in barbara hambley’s novels (“those who hunt at night” (aka "immortal blood") and "journey with the dead")there's a nice joke about bond reminding beauregard of sergeant dravot. : In the 1975 film the man who wanted to be king, dravot was played by sean connery...Hamish bond may be based on fleming's novels, but the scene with the russian spy (with the white cat, you know) plays with cinema. The film's influence on flattop has already been noted; the secret base plays on the general perception of the secret bases of bond movie villains, if not a particular one; and the man with the cat, whose face is always in shadow, is based on how blofeld appeared in from russia with love: his face was always off-screen or turned away from the camera, and whenever he spoke, the camera would close-up him the ubiquitous house cat. (A cat that doesn't exist in the books, by the way.)

Mark odell also adds:

An american yard protector from kansas named kent - replacing the late great steve reeves (who was also from kansas)miriam blaylock: catherine deneuve character from tony scott's the hunger (1983)jonas cord: from harold robbins' carpetbags (and the 1966 film starring george peppard). The frankenstein creature also has jaws teeth from the spy who loved me and moonraker and oddjob's bowler hat from goldfinger. His name likely refers to the dick tracy character, and his inclusion is a reference to the film version of casino royale. Another reference to this film is the witchcraft antics of orson welles. Another connection to mr. Wells is the appearance of the martian from the war of the worlds. The clay creature could also be connected to the dc universe, as in addition to being the golem, it could also be the clayface from the batman comics.

Steve kidd intervenes:

"A wretched-looking tumbler named collins... A rare american vampire" (p.160-1), barnabas collins from dark shadowsjoshua york (p.163), one of the guests at the wedding, a vampire from george r. R. Martin's dream of febvreedward weiland (p. 163), another wedding guest from the vampire tapestry by susie mckee charnashugh farnham (p. 163) - again a guest at the wedding - a vampire-like character from bad dreams kim newman edmund cordery (p. 208) — researcher vampire from brian stableford's empire of fearand in case anyone missed it, on p. 261: genevieve notices that hamish bond has changed subtly: “there was something different about him. He was one of those who always seems to play, play the part. But the quality of his game has changed, he has become wider, less convincing. He expressed himself too much with his eyebrows. The scottish accent in his accent is gone." This, of course, refers to roger moore, famous for his eyebrow gymnastics, who replaced sean connery as james bond in a series of films.

Anibas - from the remake of la maschera del demoniopeter blood -- this is a character from the coffin of doctor bloodalthough the mother of tears is taken from the argento trilogy, her various aspects are taken from other european films - the little girl from fellini's toby dammit, viridiana. From the film of the same name by luis buñuel, mamma roma from the film of the same name by pasolini and the old soothsayer from bicycle thieves.

Author, kim newman, december 31, 1998» in addition to three novels, in the anno dracula series includes coppola's dracula, a novella published in stephen jones' the mammoth book of dracula (and his mammoth book of best new horror: 1998, available online at infinity plus) i'm going to start work on another novella, andy's dracula warhol", which extends the series until the end of the 1970s. A novel tentatively titled johnny alucard: the dracula years 1976-79. That may well be the case, at least for a while.”

Recent news: beyond midnight, the last story in the anno dracula triptych, is now finished. It is proposed to publish three stories ("coppola's dracula" and "andy warhol's dracula" - two previous stories) as a novel called "johnny alucard".

Coppola's dracula, 1976 dracula, stephen jones , ed. Carroll kim newman tells me he is "sorry for the arrow pun")"the money was on the polished oak dining table in suitcases. It had already been counted out, but johnny sat down and did it again. Rudy almost derisively called him 'earl'. The boy didn't understand; the money didn't belong to johnny until it was counted." Couldn't keep andy's blood low, his stomach distended, gout spouted from his mouth and nose." Mark odell adds:

Kim newman tells me the following information:

Nocturna - refers to as to the dc comics character, and to nye bonet, who plays the role of dracula's disco granddaughter in the movie nocturna

1980 who dares wins: anno dracula 1980. Read online.

Skipping references to real people and noting only fictional borrowed characters:

Baron meinster (brides of dracula, 1960 film, english)sergeant dravot (the man who wanted to be king, rudyard kipling)inspector cherry (detective, novels by peter van greenaway)caleb croft (vampire grave , also known as the seed of terror, 1972)hamish bond (ian fleming's james bond)lord ruthven (from dr. John polidori's the vampire, 1819)count von orlok (nosferatu )

Steve smith adds:

"An older bobby from a more benevolent past." I believe this refers to the british television series dixon of dock green

And paul chamberlain adds:

The character patricia rice appears. It mentions that her great-uncle was a famous comedian. This is likely a reference to archie rice, the protagonist of john osborne's play the entertainer.

1981 the other side of midnight (in the vampire sextette anthology, science fiction club)

Again, no real people or events are listed, only fictitious cross-references .

Don drago robles (curse of the undead, 1959; film about a vampire shooter in the old west)baron meinster (brides of dracula, 1960 film, english)timmy valentine (vampire rock star in the c. Kim newman writes to me:

The "barbara dahl" part is also a reference to a mattel barbie doll if she is considered a character. I know that mattel released star trek and the x-files of barbie and ken, but if they made a buffy and angel tie-in, the dolls would just look like their regular products. Shadow bay is the setting for dennis atchison's novel. Shadow man. And the nighthawks diner is from his short story the late shift (not to mention the painting by edward hopper). Jack martin is the pseudonym that dennis uses and has appeared as a character in his books and stories.

Dennis power and brad mengel add:

Moondoggie ( gidget)dirk diggler (protagonist of boogie nights, 1999)

And dennis power also identified them:

Noah cross (chinatown)mariphasa lupino lumino (london werewolf flower)audriensis jr. (Edible plant human from little shop of horrors)triffidus celestus mobile (sentient plants from day of the triffids)sharkko press (reference to the man who swindled phil farmer out of money for the first riverworld novel)gloomy twilight (another name for dark shadows)the dude (jeff "the dude" lebowski from the big lebowski 1998)the sawyers (texas chainsaw massacre)starring karen white and lew landers (from howl, although lew also appears in gremlins)lina lamont (silent film star from singing in the rainblanche hudson (former movie star from what ever happened to baby jane?) Norma desmond (from sunset boulevard)

Loki carbis adds:

"Simon sharpe", the assassin's headquarters, is a parody of "mr. Rose". Pointy" (name of buffy's favorite share of the tv show) "an inbred brood from the backwoods... Got rich in texas and moved to beverly hills." ( The beverly hillbillies )orson welles count dracula has stage productions that parallel those of touch of evil and his the other side of midnight has stage productions similar to those of citizen kane

Matthew davis adds:

David serchai adds:

One of the porn actresses is holly body, and although there is a real porn star by that name, i have a feeling that newman was referring to melanie griffith's character in body double

1988–1989 tim burton's red reign: anno dracula 1988–1989 by dan tsiraka. Read online.

In general, no real people and events are listed (except to demonstrate parallel topics), only fictitious cross-references.

Gomez, morticia and fester addams , as well as the thing (the addams family; actor jack nicholson's flirtation with morticia is a play about his previous relationship with anjelica huston, who played morticia in the film versions of the addams family; nicholson's role in burton's third red kingdom film is similar to nicholson's participation in the "real" third character renfield (actor tracey walter plays renfield; in our universe, walter was also in burton's batman movie as bob the thug)character charles beauregard (actor michael keaton plays beauregard; in keaton played bruce wayne/batman in our universe)character van helsing (actor michael gough plays van helsing; in our universe gough played the butler alfred in burton's batman)baron meinster (brides of dracula, 1960 film, english)the dictator von doom (dr. Victor von doom from marvel comics' fantastic four)janos skorzani (janos skorzeny from jeff rice's original kolchak: the nightstalker novel and tv movie; the other janos skorzeny was a character played zeppelin game by chuck connors in the television program the werewolf (1987-88))lord ruthven (from dr. Caligari (danny devito plays caligari in the sequel movie the bloody red baron; in the real universe, devito was in the batman sequel, batman returns)many other actors involved in burton's films in this universe, such as johnny depp, winona ryder, and kim basinger are mentioned as appearing in similar burton films in the anno dracula universe)

Dan ciraki adds the following:

I would add raoul duke, author of blood and hate in las vegas ". Duke, of course, was hunter s. Thompson's pseudonym in fear and hate in las vegas. Since newman placed karl kolchak in the first book of anno dracula, set in 1888, i decided that duke would be the deputy reporter who bets on skorzani in las vegas. Of course, johnny depp played duke/thompson in the movie version of fear and hate. You can also throw in tommy lee jones and joel schumacher as general yorg's love is supposed to parallel batman forever. Dr . Quincy, mentioned in passing in connection with the film blood and hate in las vegas, is a character on the jack klugman television series. “Kate has seen these pendants before. Who hoped to establish a vampire homeland on dracula's old estates in transylvania." Of course, this entire episode refers to the dracula's castle dirt pendants that captain company sold in creepy, eerie, vampirella and famous monsters of filmland magazines in the 70s.It should be noted that although this story takes place in the anno dracula universe, it does break continuity, as it suggests that dracula is still dead. Once newman releases johnny alucarda, we'll see dracula's resurrection. (Come on! It's dracula - he never stays dead!)

Many thanks for the help on all the lists: paul andinach, andrew j.
